The Land’s Beginnings:
In 1840, the Van Tonder family purchased Paardenkop farm in Thaba Nchu from King Barolong Boo Seleke. The king, who settled here in 1833 with his 15,000 people, had acquired the land from King Moshoeshoe, laying the foundation for a vibrant community.
A Voortrekker Haven:
For six generations, the Van Tonders nurtured this historic farm, which became a vital stop for Voortrekkers traveling between Natal and the Cape. At its heart stood a maternity hospital, a beacon of hope where pregnant Voortrekker women gave birth, welcoming new life amidst their arduous journeys.
